Travis Cooper (9) won Bronze, Maya Pemberton (8) won Gold, Hugo (7) won silver and Harvey Lloyd-Goffin (9) got bronze.

Coaches Corin and Tristan Smith who are both World and European champions themselves teach the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class on a Saturday mornings at Combat Athlete in Ketley have been preparing them for the competition over the last few months.
“They were all very nervous as it was their first competition and for them to all come back with medals was amazing” said head coach Corin. “To see them grow in confidence and achieve something they never though they could makes my job worthwhile. I love to train my students to develop life skills and see them grow as kids”.

Thirty six competitors took part in a Mixed Martial Arts Challenge for charity at the Park Inn, Telford.  Most of the participants had little or no experience in martial arts however took the challenge which involved 8 weeks free intensive training at Combat Athlete in Telford and Wolverhampton MMA gym.  At the end of the training they all competed against each other at a professionally run Mixed Martial Arts event right here in Telford.

“It was a great experience I have learnt so much in just 8 weeks and to fight on the event was the ultimate personal challenge for me, I have made lots of new friends and loved the whole experience” said one of the competitors.

The whole event was to raise money for a local young Telford girl Sienna who needs constant treatment every year at a specialist hospital. The event raised close to £1000 to help with the cost towards this treatment.  Her mum who attended the event was overwhelmed with the support from the fighters and the show and thought it was amazing that MMA Challenge were helping Sienna.

Plans for the next MMA Challenge are well underway and will take place on 13^th March 2016 at the Park Inn, Telford.  Training is due to start in the New Year on 16^th January 2016 in Telford and Wolverhampton.  This event will be supporting the ‘Make a Wish’ Charity to help children’s dreams come true.  Competitors get 8 weeks FREE training by expert coaches before competing with full safety gear at a professionally run event in front of friends, family and colleagues.

Tristan Smith 15, won Gold in both Gi and No Gi divisions as an orange belt, then also went on to win Gold in both Gi and No Gi in the open-weight divisions. Corin Smith 17, won both gold in Gi and No Gi divisions as a blue belt.

The boys father Gavin Smith said ‘After becoming World Champions in California in previous years, and achieving Gold in several British competitions they are having a great year and looking forward to what the future holds for my sons.  They work very hard for what they have achieved and really deserve it’.

We have one of the head coaches of the kids UK BJJ Elite Squad teaching at Combat Athlete in Telford and I expect that we will start to see more talented students from Telford progress towards world competitions and putting Telford Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on the map.

Congratulations to brothers Corin Smith (14) and Tristan Smith (12) returned with Gold and Silver medals from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships in California.

The international event attracted the world’s best juniors and 22 UK competitors made the trip to the states.

Tristan was one of five from the UK to get Gold beating both opponents by submission in under a minute, while brother Corin won Silver narrowly missing out on Gold to his UK teammate.

Brother’s parents Gavin and Sam who took the trip with them spent a nerve racking day waiting for them to compete.  Just to have got to this international competition was an achievement because the level was so high.  After a four hour selection process they were both selected to compete as part of a UK BJJ Youth Squad team.  “They have put in a lot of hard work and training, we are very proud parents.” added the boys father.

The brothers from Shifnal are members of Combat Athlete Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Ketley, Telford and have been training in Martial Arts since the age of four years old.

Both have already won several medals in British competitions including their first Gold last year, and are looking to take their skills even further.  Training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts it has given them the discipline and confidence to achieve this great opportunity.
